The two commissioned works were produced in response to the artist’s research into the particular materiality of the artist's laptop and its ecological concerns, where the research and process of one work informed the design of another and vice versa – in a somewhat disjointed way – as if the works are irrelevantly yet relationally connected, much like ecological relationality. ### is an interactive, participatory, p2p-website providing detailed information concerning the seemingly banal materiality of the artist’s obsolete Apple laptop and its ecological implication. The viewers are invited to participate to host the website on the distributed network of the peer-to-peer web, in order to prolong the material visibility of the laptop which acts as a data server in the network. ### Deep Time Counter Dashboard (Prototype v1.0) Around 4.54 billion years ago, the earth was formed. It took billions of years for the earth to compose the elements to make digital devices. **[1]** The browser dashboard counts down 4.54 billion years from October 2013 - when the artist’s obsolete laptop was produced. Once launched, the dashboard will make the sound of a stone dropping every minute, making visible and reminding the material relationship between the laptop, other devices and the geologic time scale hidden behind our digital lives. **[1]** _Anatomy of an AI System (printed version), Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler, 2018, p5._ --- **Bio** Shinji Toya (1984) is a digital artist from Japan, based in London in the UK for more than a decade. His practice uses creative programming, Artificial Intelligence, the Internet, participation, video, image manipulation and painting. It deals with the poetic aspects emerging in the tension between what the systems of knowledge and computation aim to capture and what they fail to capture. Toya’s recent practice critically explores the relationship between image, data, and generative processes emerging through networked participation and digital culture(s). He currently focuses on the relationship between materiality and computation in terms of networked ecologies. Previously Toya presented his projects at Ars Electronica, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Royal Academy of Arts (UK), arebyte Gallery, Fotomuseum Winterthur and Watermans.
